As described earlier, Democratic Republic of Congo is their native country but they can be found in many African states. Just like Indian Peafowl in India, They also stated as national bird of Democratic Republic of Congo.


Congo peafowls are listed on the list of IUCN. According to their stats, their population is between 3000 and 15000 thousand. Although, the population of these birds is decreasing over time due to logging, habitat loss, and shifting cultivation. Apart from that, most pet trades target them to hunt birds.

Due to habitat loss and hunting, nowadays, the population of adult Congo peafowl birds on the IUCN list would be approximately 10,000 thousand only. If we talk about the overall their population at the current time, the estimated result shows us that there are only 12 to 15000 thousand in the wild.


They are rare and expensive than the other peafowls. A young bird’s estimated cost is around $250 to $500 and a chick is available in $100 to $120. It is suggested to buy a pair or more than 1 bird which will reduce the cost per bird and also they live happily in groups.


In 1936, Congo peafowl birds were discovered in the lowland forest of the Congo democratic public. When Dr. Chapin saw them for the very first time he was not able to identify them. They have long reddish brown feathers which he has never seen in any other peafowl species. After that, he went to the royal museum of Central Africa and compared his previously discovered Indian peacock bird with his newly discovered Congo peafowl. Both birds were different from one another.

Dr. Chapin discovered seven more specimens of the Congo peafowl birds in 1955. Guinea fowl and peafowl characteristics are found in Congo peafowl birds which means Congo peafowl has the connection between both guinea fowl and peafowl birds. Congo peafowl birds are smaller than the genus Pavo but if we talk about Africa, this species of peafowl is the only big phasianid.

Appearance of Congo Peacock

Congo peacock birds have bills in gray color and a bare throat in red. They come in a lot of amazing and bright colors. In peacocks, their crest is split into parts. The tail of a peacock is longer than the tail of a peahen in terms of length. If we look at their color, they have green and blue tips on their tail with black color. Appearance of Congo Peahen

As we already mentioned, Congo peahens are smaller than Congo peacocks and are not brightly colored as Congo peacocks are, but still, they are one of the most astonishing female birds. They have a glossy-green and brown body. Their tails are smaller than peacocks. The Congo female chicks are quite similar to adult Congo peahens in terms of looks such as colors.
